BOUND surrealist self-portraiture
SEPTEMBER 2011
illustration, fluid simulation

Bound was created in response to a prompt asking for an image composed of object or concepts that were symbolic or important to its creator. Of course, most of what I make includes concepts that I think are important, but the prompt had another requirement. The final image would be a surrealist self-portrait. As insane as that request may sound, I enjoyed the challenge. Surrealist art has an odd place in my life. This is very fitting, but did cause some difficulty in generating ideas for the project. I enjoy surrealist artwork, but I don’t know if I would call it “good.” I decided to completely ignore my prejudice and dive right in.

The final image is loosely based on a dream I had, in following the surrealist tradition. Important objects, colors, and concepts were added to make a cohesive and visually interesting composition. This is one of my favorite pieces. —Andrew
