Iridescence

While coding up a raytracer for fun, I accidentally discovered a mostly useless but very pretty graphical glitch. Instead of smoothly shading the matte sphere as expected, it was behaving closer to anisotropic lighting — the kind that makes brushed metals look so unique, with long bands of highlight running perpendicular to the brushing.

I picked apart the code and started to see if I could make it approximate the kind of anisotropic iridescence you can see on DVDs.
